Housing-with-care is a recent but natural evolution of retirement housing to provide an environment capable of enabling older people to maintain their independence even if they become physically or mentally frail. The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It monitors and inspects services, to make sure they are safe, effective and provide high-quality care. This was the first inspection of the service since the current provider took over in July 2018.
This is the latest available inspection report for this service, carried out on 19th May 2009. As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other. Those run by private operators more often focus on lifestyle, with help and care services discretely available to buy if or when required.

However, a number of these checks had not picked up on the shortfalls identified during the inspection. We found that the management checks focused on paperwork and failed to recognise the lack of care being provided to people. Activities were available for people and further improvements were planned to increase these and provide further access to the local community. People were treated with respect and dignity and their independence encouraged and supported.
But also because planning ahead may be needed to ensure that where you live now is ‘age proofed’, and that if you wish to consider moving, you have good information and advice to help you understand all your options. Buying a ‘home for life plan’, or ‘lifetime lease’, gives you the right to live in a property until you die or move to a care home. This might enable you to live somewhere you couldn’t otherwise afford.
Riccall House Care Home
Our beautiful 19th Century House features en-suite bedrooms, four lounges and a separate dining area & conservatory for residents to relax in. We also have a central courtyard and scented garden for those who wish to spend time outdoors. We have a busy activities program for those who wish to be involved. One of our most special visitors is Joey the Donkey, who has been visiting us regularly for almost 2 years, Tikka the PAT dog now visits monthly and is also adored by residents and staff alike.
The home provides both single and shared accommodation on two storeys and has a passenger lift. The range of fees charged are from social services rates to private rates of £645.00 per week for residential care and £745.00 for nursing, minus the Registered Nurse Care Contribution. Fees include all services apart from hairdressing, dry cleaning, reflexology, newspapers, chiropody and private taxi hire.

Before each meal, the dining room is laid with tablecloths, napkins, cutlery and table decorations. Neil’s regular ‘come dine with us’ nights enable relatives to join residents for a fine dining experience at their home. Actions were not taken when people required additional support or a referral to a health care practitioner. Staff were not sufficiently trained or supported to enable them to fully understand their role. Staff had not received sufficient training in specialist areas such as behaviours that can be challenging to others, moving and handling and restraint. This meant that staff were not skilled in ensuring that care was provided in a safe and least restrictive way.

The comfortable lounge and dining areas have a warm, homely feel where residents can enjoy relaxing or taking part in activities in the company of others.
